Audio Post Production has many job titles.

How much do you know about Audio Post Production?

There are several steps that the audio must go through before you hear the magically crafted sound on a film. The most important role is the Sound Supervisor, they are the head of the department and often build a sound team to make sure they get the best sound mix possible. Sound Supervisors also deal with the Director and client directly.

Let’s go through a typical Audio Post Production team.

1. Dialogue Editor

The Dialogue Editor is the first port of call. They would take the sound from the location synced up with the picture, usually in the form of an AAF or OMF, which comes from the editor. The Dialogue Editor would then work on the sound files to ensure the audio dialogue is constant and free of any pops, clicks, distortion, or background noises.

2. ADR recordist and mixer

ADR(Automated Dialogue Replacement) happens when the sound from the set is terrible. The ADR mixer would then record those lines in the studio, ensuring that the sound matches the location. The ADR mixer would work closely with the Director and the talent to achieve the best possible recording.

3. Sound Designer

The Sound Designer would create the sounds that make the story believable. For example, when you walk into a coffee shop, you hear people, coffee machines, and the ambiance of the outside world. The sound designer is responsible for all the noise we hear because none of that comes from the set.

4. Sound effects Editor

The Sound effects editor will add sound effects from a sound library and adds them to the picture to make it flow with the narrative.

5. Foley artist

A Foley artist would typically record missing natural sounds like footsteps, cloth movements, weapon handling, and everyday item use.

6. Re-Recording mixer

A Re-Recording mixer is a final step in the process. The mixer works closely with the director and producers to create the final mix. The Mixer would include all the tracks the team has designed and decide what stays in the mix and what goes. The Mixer would then mix all the elements so they appear in the final mix. The overall tone and technical specification are critical points for the final deliverables.
