People spend so much time rewriting and rewriting that they never get to finish the script, and it sits on the shelf forever, more often being a great idea wasted. Stick to what you are good at, and the writing will flow easier. If you are naturally funny, then stick to comedy. What are your strengths?

Trying new things isn’t bad, but you will be more creative if you stick to the basics, which begin with your strengths. Listening to a piece of music can be inspirational if you run out of ideas. Let your imagination run wild, don’t be scared to pick up the newspaper and grab a story to use as a starting point for a scene or a character. How far can you push your imagination?

Make sure your characters have a plot. Every character wants something. Make sure it’s difficult for them to get it. It is always better to show this through their actions as opposed to their dialogue. Try not to write a cliched character. Change it up when scriptwriting with things like their occupation, sex, and class. The change can often take the story to an exciting place while simultaneously escaping the cliche of familiar characters. What special characteristics would your characters have?

Don’t be afraid to experiment with your script.
